I have tried everything, well almost everything with my hair. I have dyed it, highlighted it, straightened it and well yes, permed it. I have permed it several times that I can read a whole novel in just one sitting! Knowing how long it takes and how the process is being done.
So, if you are planning to perm your hair either you are a first timer or someone who wants to try again, this article will explain the several different types of hair perm and hair treatments that follows.
Perm Class 101
So, what are perms anyway? Those are those beautiful shaped locks that twist and curl from the tip of the head till the end. This involves a lot of heat, chemicals depending on the thickness and shape of the hair. There are two types of perm process that can be used for curling the hair. There is cold and digital perm. Cold perm is a method that uses regular rollers and curlers, with a more alkaline base solution that leaves the hair more defined and wet. Before the start of digital perming, this use to be very popular method women of all ages used to bring a softer baby curl like fashion to the hair. If you are unsure about perms and have a smaller budget, then cold wave perms are a good try on.
Unlike cold perms, digital perming uses heat and a curling machine with a combination of stronger chemicals. The chemicals used sort of break down the formation of the hair and after using the curling rod, the hair is made into a softer concept and has more volume in it. Compared to cold perming, the hair at the scalp is limited to being used by the curler, as it could cause a bad burn. But otherwise, it’s one of the best methods to use for hair curling with longer lasting results giving the hair a more natural look.
However if you are still unsure that perms are something good for you, you can always try temporary perms that easily go off after you have your hair washed, or if you want to do it at home, there is a method called ‘overnight sock bun’. This is a simple and convenient way, where you roll your washed hair into a bun using a scrunchie, leave it in that position at least all through the night, and you will wake up with natural curls, just apply some hair spray or styling mousse, and that’s it!
Post Perm Care
After having the perms which ever that you have decided to do for yourself, there are a few simple tips that you can do in order to make your perms last longer than usual. Just remember that caring for curled hair is way different than straightened hair. And unlike steamed straightened hair, permed hair is much easier to work on and handled if you are doing it correctly.
Firstly, after perming, do not wash your hair for at least 48 hours after doing it. This is because the shampoo and conditioner you use will damage the chemicals that have been used to curl your hair. These chemicals need at least two days to really lock in tight into the shape the hair has been designed. During this time frame, also restrain from tying your hair using hair elastics or tight clips. These bands will also damage the curls. If you really need to brush your hair, just gently run your fingers through it to untie a clog, other than that, don’t use a comb either. Yes, it does sound hard, but the moment you try fixing your hair during these hours, the outcome will be much more dissatisfying and you will have to make another trip to the salon.
After two days are gone, you can wash your hair using a shampoo or conditioner that goes well with curly hair. This is because the ingredients in these shampoos are able to not disturb the chemicals that have been used in the perming of the hair. Besides that, the shampoo and conditioner can keep the hair hydrated maintaining the natural glossy look. When combing hair, do it while its wet and using a wide tooth comb is highly recommended. This type of comb removes tangles gently without damaging the hair.
Summary
Now, if you find that you are not really happy with what you have done to your hair, (because perming is permanent), there is always the option of straightening it back. But whatever it is, always consult your hairstyles for more tips of how to maintain the perms. Happy trying!
