The one thing that makes our nose cringe is when we find out that our hair has welcomed split ends! It is a woman’s nightmare to deal with it. However, there is some good news. Follow these simple tips and you don’t have to worry about split ends at all.
When the hair is exposed to heat and chemicals, it dries up and damages causing the split ends. There are many reasons for split ends. This includes the scorching heat, especially the sun or the hot water you use when washing hair. Sometimes, shampoos and the constant use of hair serums, topping up with hair dryers, straighteners and curlers also contribute to the damage. Not to mention, using the wrong comb or brush on the scalp and hair. Of course we cannot avoid doing such things to our hair. What we can do is either minimize it or use a different, less damageable method. Here are the few things you can do:
Comb it right
When brushing the hair, many of us tend to be rough on the knot that stands in between. Especially after we have washed our hair and want to comb it. We seem to think that when we press harder, the knots will go off. However, the harder we push the comb down, the easier it is to damage and the easier it is for so much hair to come out along with the comb! Instead of using a comb that has small space in between teeth, use a wide-tooth comb. Unlike the normal comb, a wide-tooth comb can help to manage the hair gently without breaking or pulling hair which can cause damage.
Leave on Conditioner
We have all been advised to use conditioner on our hair after shampooing. Yes, there are benefits to it. After a minute or two on the hair, the foam is then lathered away. In the end, leaving the hair unprotected. Using a leave on conditioner will give extra protection to the hair, especially the ends. When the head is later on exposed to heat, nothing will happen to the hair. It will remain safe. When investing in a leave on conditioner, do find something that can deliver well. If unsure what to purchase, talk to your hairstylist for recommendations.
Using the Hair Dryer
The common mistake we do is, as soon as we come out of the shower with our hair all wet, we immediately use the dryer. There is no time in between for the hair to relax and breathe. To avoid split ends, air dry the hair first, for at least 30 to 45 minutes. Then only use a dryer. Now when using a dryer, avoid it directly touching your scalp or it will damage it badly. Try to focus on the hair itself and the tips. But that too, don’t do it in a close range, but at a fair distance.
One note: frequently blow drying hair also damages the ends. So if you do have to wash your hair often, try to alternate days of using the hair dryer.
Snip it away!
The last but not least suggestion is of course visiting the hair stylist. They will be able to help you trim the split ends away. They can also give you advice on how often to come back, or even better, trim it in a good manner so you don’t have to visit them again because of the split ends.
Some stylists recommend to cut a bit more of the hair or come in every 6 to 8 weeks, before the hair has the chance to turn into a split end. It is more like a prevention method.
